Altered Index Card

1a

Today I'm going to be sharing how I altered an Index Card. Altered Index Cards are quite the popular thing to do in the Crafting Community, they are simple to make and easy to mail.

What you will need:

Helmar Tacky Craft Glue and Helmar Premium Craft Glue, scissors, ruler, index card (or heavy weight cardstock), suitable image of your liking, a variety of light weight papers such as graph paper and book paper and also a decorative cardstock/paper (I used 'Cést La Vie by Couture Creations), lace and fabric scraps and any smaller embellishments you may desire to add.

1

Firstly size your index card, I only had large or very small so I cut a large one down to 15 x 10cm (6 x 4") which is the most popular size to make. Once you have done this you can ink around the edges to soften the look of the card making it a little bit vintage.

2

Once this was done I ripped a piece of calico slightly smaller than the card and then proceeded to rip the various papers, sizing them down as I went.

I then ripped a piece of decorative 12" cardstock to a width of about 4.5cm x 28cm (1.75 x 11") and lightly inked the edges. I placed it flush to the left hand side and folded it around the card to the back. I purposely cut the decorative paper shorter so that it would add some interest on the back and be easier to use as a pocket.

5

Using the small off-cut from the index card I inked the edges and placed it sideways under the decorative strip on the back.

8

This smaller piece will be glued into place in an 'L' shape (down the left hand side and along the bottom) so that it forms a little pocket. The decorative strip will lay over it and be held in place with a little glue along the top edge of the smaller piece of index card. I used Helmar Premium Craft Glue for extra strength.

Using Helmar Tacky Craft Glue I applied it to some heavy cardstock and smoothed it out with my finger and then placed my image on top and allowed this to dry.

While the image was drying I went ahead and started to glue everything into place. I used Helmar Tacky Craft Glue for the lighter weight pieces (papers) and Helmar Premium Craft Glue for heavier things such as the fabric and embellishments.

Once my image was dry, I fussy cut it out (leaving a small border) and lightly inked the edges. I then played around with the placement of things and once I was happy I went ahead and glued everything into position.

I wrapped a piece of seam binding ribbon around the whole card and securely knotted and glued it on the back of the card so that it wouldn't untie using Helmar Premium Craft Glue. Along with the ribbon I added a vintage flower and a dictionary word. Using more of the decorative paper I ripped a piece 12.5 x 7.5cm (5 x 3") to slide into the pocket on the back where I will add my personal details at a later stage.

To the front of the card I added the image together with vintage buttons and flowers and a little scrap of doiley and lace. I also added the word 'beautiful'.

I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial and will consider trying one yourself. You could easily make a small batch of these so that if a Challenge comes along you can easily join in.

Thank you so much for stopping by and take care 🙂
