Hi all it's Vicki-Ann here today and its Melbourne cup day in Australia. Its where our nation stops to watch a horse race. Everyone dresses up in their finest to go to the race or even just the BBQ in the carpark at the races. There is lots of cup day parties with champagne, chicken and salads and everyone dresses up for these too. So thought I would make a hat. Well a fascinator is the technical term for it.
So I gathered up what I thought I could make it out of and grabbed a bottle of Helmar 450 quick dry Adhesive.
First I started by covering the dip container yep I used an empty dip container, thought it made a great little top to place my other elements on. I placed a row of Helmar 450 quick dry adhesive along the inside edge of the container.
Then put my hessian material over pressing onto the glue. Now this I found a bit tricky as I have hurt my wrist at the moment and am having a bit of trouble holding anything. So as you can see I used lots of mini pegs to hold things in place. If I had used thinner material and not hessian the pegs would not have been necessary. They worked great though so i used them again on the bow.
I cut the bow shape out of paper to get the size right. Then I cut it out of some cardboard and using the Helmar 450 quick dry Adhesive I adhered the fabric to the cardboard again using the pegs to hold it in place. I joined the 2 together with staples underneath and then molded them to the shape of the bow. I wrapped a strip of more of the material over the middle and used more glue to hold it in place at the join underneath.
Next I covered my head band with string. To do this I just added a line of Helmar 450 quick dry Adhesive at the bottom of the headband and then wrapped the string around the headband just adding another dab of the Helmar 450 adhesive at the end of the length of string along the headband. Thought that the string kind of matched in with the hessian.
I used a little of some white hat netting, I see them a lot on fascinators so I added that under my bow and added the hessian flower. I made the flower with the Tim Holtz movers and shapers Die cut. Then I added a circle of string in the middle and a little half pearl in the centre, adding this to the top of the bow. I then adhered these elements to the top of my covered container using Helmar 450 quick dry adhesive .
I then attached this to my headband using a little strip of the hessian over the headband and onto the container. I left that bit of the headband with no string as it had those little teeth that hold onto your hair to keep it in place and you cant see it under the container.
I ran a row of Helmar 450 quick dry adhesive over the inside and tucked some black satin material over the inside and under the headband just to cover up the inside and make it neat. This also made the fascinator darker on the outside as you could still see through the hessian in parts and see through the clear dip container.
Thanks to my friend Jo for the fabulous glass head that I was able to photograph my Fascinator on.
This was a bit of a challenge to make and I really had to think outside the box as I have never made a fascinator before. I will have to have a bet on the horse that has the number 9 as that ended up being quite a dominate number there on the fascinator.
Happy cup day hope your horse wins.
