Hello crafty friends! Today I'm going to share with you a fun project that I created to showcase some of my favorite finds from the sea. I love the idea of creating miniature shrines to celebrate different areas of my life.
I do want to note here that somehow, someway I lost {?} the beginning photos of the 1st steps but I will fill you in on the process. I started off by applying my chosen paper on to the inner pieces of this mini shrine from Retro Art Cafe. I used HELMAR Craft Glue for this job and allowed it to dry overnight. I proceeded to then trim off any excess paper to insure a good fit between all the pieces. I then painted all the exterior pieces of the shrine, which is made from masonite, with Paper Artsy Fresco Finish paint in Mermaid…isn't it the perfect color for this shrine.
Next I wanted a crackle finish and was eager to try the HELMAR Crackle Medium. It is a 2 step process and I followed the instructions found on the back of the package. I think it is fair to say that I don't think I applied enough of Step 1 and even though I let it stay overnight it was quite sticky the next morning. I was sure I hadn't done it correctly but applied Step 2 and allowed it to dry. I was so pleased when I went back and saw the fine crackle finish I had achieved and the stickiness was gone. I couldn't get a clear picture of the crackle but it is evident in person. The next time I will apply Step 1 more liberally and I think the crackle will be larger and more evident. My piece looks like a fine old piece of china that has started to craze.
Here you can see the finished interior and the front piece of the shrine ready to have seashells and beads glued on with HELMAR 450 Quick Dry Adhesive.
After the shells and beads were dry I added a thin layer of Ranger Crystal Stickles. The completed front with my seashells and beads after I added layers of the Viva Stone-Art in Sand to create the look of being at the beach. I also covered wooden spools with the Viva Stone-Art to create legs which I attached to the shrine with HELMAR 450 Quick Dry Adhesive and Liquid Scrap Dots.
Shrine completed and ready to add my tiny treasures from the sea.
