I have created some simple home décor for Christmas using a piece of balsa wood + 2 pieces of scrap timber.
So let's create:
First I drew 3 different sized tree shapes onto a piece of balsa wood with a lead pencil.
Then using a Stanley knife and steel ruler as a guide, I carefully cut out each tree shape.
I then painted a coat of gesso to the front & back of each tree, then allow to dry.
Next I selected the decorative layer of a paper napkin.
I applied a coat of Craft & Hobby PVA Glue to the front only of each tree shape.
Then adhered the trees to the napkin as show. Allow to completely dry.
Next using a fine grade sandpaper & a sanding block, sand along the edges of each tree shape as shown.
This will remove any excess napkin leaving a nice clean edge.
Next I glued in place a gold star to the top of each tree using 450 Quick Dry Adhesive.
Then seal each tree shape with a coat of Crystal Kote Matte Varnish.
Tip: read the manufactures label for information on how to best use this product.
Then paint a scrap piece of timber to use as a base to glue the trees too!
Starting with the largest tree, I applied P.V.A. Professional Woodworking Glue to the bottom of the tree and then fixed it in place. Repeat this process with the remaining two trees as shown.
To finish I adhered some pinecones and berries using 450 Quick Dry Adhesive.
Well… I am not quite finished.
As there was a piece of balsa wood left over I decided to create some houses.
Start by drawing 3 different sized houses onto the balsa wood. Then carefully cut out each house shape.
I then gave each house a light sand using fine grade sand paper.
Each of the houses was given a coat of chalk paint.
Once dry I applied a coat of wax over the painted surface.
Next paint a piece of scrap timber to use as a base.
Then glue each house to the timber base using P.V.A. Professional Woodworking Glue.
To decorate I glued a gold star, a paper flower cluster, a faux bush and a cherry tree using 450 Quick Dry Adhesive.
