I've been in my new house for 6 months now and my scrap room is STILL not set up the way I want it, but I made a big step in the right direction this week when I created this altered spice rack to hold some of my messy supplies. My children are obsessed with getting into my scrap room and taking off with my things, so I need to start getting things organised so they are beyond their reach.
I used a similar process to what DT member Beck used on her altered project, which you can see here.
I have started with this old spice rack that I rescued from certain demise as my brother in law was about to throw it out. A quick clean and I was on my way. I began with a few coats of paint and that alone made a huge difference. Once dry, I adhered some pretty purple papers to the main sections. I used Helmar Premium Craft Glue for this job.
****Most importantly though, I used the Helmar glue spreader to make sure I had a really even coverage of glue because without that, I knew the papers were at risk of bubbling once I applied the crackle medium. ****
Next I applied Helmar Crackle Medium step 1. The important thing to remember with this is that even once it is ready for step 2, it is still really tacky to the touch. (All the instructions are on the jar, so you can't go wrong). Next, I applied Helmar Crackle Medium step 2. While I got a really lovely result, in hindsight, I think I probably could have gone a bit thicker with it, so if you plan to have a go, dont be afraid to be generous. This step takes a while to dry. I left it all day. Overnight is even better.
I had wanted to apply some distressing ink, but naturally it appears that I am out of it, now that I want to use it. This would have achieved a different result again, by adding more definition to the cracks.
Once dry, all that was left to do was add my embellishments. I adhered some inked chipboard pieces using my Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive, then adhered all my flowers in small random clusters again using my 450. Finally some leaves and a couple of small butterflies added the finishing touches.
I absolutely love how this came out, and will be scouring the op shops for some more old spice racks so I can have a whole set up on the wall, away from little fingers.
So, what can I alter next? Hmmm…..
