Wood Decor

Hello, everyone! Susan here with another project for you. I have to say, I'm in LOVE with this one. Do you do that, too? Fall in love with your projects once they are done? Ok, enough keeping you in suspense….here's my project!

Finished

I'm so pleased with how the finished product came out! I can't wait to make more of these for general decor or as gifts for Christmas! Let me share with you how I made it. First I gathered my supplies.

Supplies

For this project, I am using Helmar's Super Strength PVA Wood Glue and Crystal Kote Matte Varnish. I also used a poplar wood craft board, some oak for trim, some acrylic paint, and stain. I cut some custom vinyl to go on the finished board. (I was unsure of my paint choices when I took this photo. I used my wood scrap to test several colors before settling on the purple)

Matte finish

I cut all the pieces to size and sanded them smooth. (ok, my husband helped cut the pieces!) After painting the board and staining the oak trim, I used the Crystal Kote to give it a matte finish and seal the pieces. I gave it three coats for durability, waiting at least 10 minutes between coats. I love how quickly the varnish dries!

Glue

We then attached the trim to the edges of the painted piece using the PVA Wood Glue. We ran a small bead around the inside of the trim, and spread it with our fingers. It was easy clean up since it's soap and water clean up.

Attach trim

We then used some scraps of wood and clamps to hold the longer pieces in place while the glue dried. My husband used a pin nailer to attach the two smaller end pieces until the glue dried. He says the pin nailer is only to hold it until the glue sets, it's not a long term solution to hold the pieces on. The glue does all the work. The best part? The glue only takes 20 minutes to set! I'm limited on patience, so this glue is perfectly tailored for people like me!

Finished

The final step was applying the vinyl to the front of the wood. I can't stop staring at this! I adore it so very much! I can see making several of these in varying sizes with lots of different quotes or sayings. Does this feel like a project you'd like to tackle? It was so easy and fast with the right Helmar products!
