Easter is fast approaching, so why not infuse your celebration with some personalised decor.
Creating these Easter Yarn Balls is a breeze and can be done in no time.
They can be customised to suit your preferences—different colors and sizes to match your space.
Tools/Supplies:
- Yarn (acrylic or cotton)
- Helmar Craft & Hobby PVA glue
- Water balloons or small 12cm balloons for larger eggs
- Bowl for mixing glue
Method:Â
Blow up the balloons to the size of your choice and tie up the ends. I wanted differing sizes (between about 7-10cm).
Thin down the PVA glue with some water.
Cut some lengths of yarn. I cut 3 pieces approximately 150cm long for each balloon.
Length will depend on the size of balloon and how open/closed you want the design to be.Â
I used what yarn I had, and none had any details on them.
However, I liked the end result of the blue thinner yarn the most.
I think this one is 8-ply acrylic, the others are probably 12-ply acrylic.
Soak each piece of yarn in the glue, then squeeze out excess.Â

Wrap each piece of yarn randomly (and fairly firmly) around the balloon.
Keep rotating the balloon as you go and try to fill in any large spaces.
When ending and beginning each new strand, tuck in the ends (see photo below).
Once you’ve finished, you need to hang the balloons to dry.
I opted to use large paperclips, with one end poked through the neck of the balloon and the other end hooked over a carton flap.
I left them to dry overnight.
Once completely dry, remove the paperclips or hooks.
The yarn should feel dry and crisp.
Grab a pin or sharp scissors and cut carefully into each balloon.
It just needs a small nick and the balloon will magically shrivel in on itself.
The crackling shrivel was actually very satisfying!
Pull the balloon out through a larger opening, use tweezer if necessary.
Trim up any wayward ends or fluff.
If there are any bits that you don’t like (eg. loose, overlapping),
you can cut them off and it won’t affect the rest of it.Â
I’ll be displaying the Yarn Eggs in a larger cake stand,
but will be similar to this…
